If you live in the ghetto and your radiator cap got stolen because your hood won't lock, nor will your doors...and you don't have time or wanna spend the money to buy a spanking new radiator cap for the junkiest vehicle you've ever owned...and you don't know how much longer it will run...but you need to do something to keep the radiator fluid from spewing out of the radiator...this is your ingenious quick fix.
(1) Cut off the top and the bottom of an apple or a potato so that it is at least 2 inches thick. (2) Whittle the circumference of the apple down to the where you can wedge it into the radiator opening. (3) Wire the apple onto the radiator as pictured.

Ingenious!
Ingenious but how long does that work before it cooks the potato which then falls apart? Why would someone steal a radiator cap? I agree with Mark, "ingenious" but isn't a radiator cap about the price of a bag of Fritos; maybe the price of eight apples (Red Delicious... the price of only three Honeycrisp). Sounds more like vandalism than theft.
this is the same anonymous again.... I was laying in bed thinking about this last night (don't ask me why) and I grew concerned. Small particles could become lodged in the radiator, making the radiator less efficient... eventually raising the chance that it could fail. A good flush might clean it out (meaning you would not need to replace the radiator but a pain nontheless.... and a greater expense than a new cap).
Hey, don't let me keep you awake a tnight.
Yes, what to do with the pieces, if they should occur? Hmm...radiator fluid is a relatively strong base which means it would work toward the disintegration of the apple piece should they occur...otherwise a good 2 hour boil would make pieces into applesauce (the time it takes to drive to my parents). However the acidity of the apple might react with the base solution of the radiator making it a weaker base, which isn't necessarily a good thing...
However, this might all buy me enough time to "vandalize" another decommissioned vehicle should one cross my path in the near future. Otherwise, the death of my little red riding hood might occur first while on the way to the compost and brush site.
I think you are having too much fun fixing a pile of junk. How much did you have to pay to get that thing out of the DUMP?? And to go through all the chemistry defending your potato?? Wow you are having way too much fun.
Well I guess I like challenging myself and trying to get cheap pieces of junk to work.
Guess brothers and sisters think alike...
TiM
lol!!
I love it.
Gotta keep the mind active now that I don't have to read books for class. Hey I miss living with you when we could "discuss" solutions to this, that and the other. My favorite is still the 2x4 stint you were on. 2x4 bed frame and 2x4 frame for the washer so that it wouldn't walk all over the basement on the spin cycle.
Brilliant :)
Best of all, just imagine the look on the face of the next one who goes for your radiator cap... :)
